Yoga sutra 1.12
abhyāsa-vairāgyābhyāṁ tan-nirodhaḥ
Mastery of the fluctuations of the mind’s activities comes from self-practice and detachment
There are two things here to master which are equally important and mutually beneficial:
diligent practice (abhyāsa); and
detachment (vairāgya).
Spiritual self-mastery is only possible through systematic practice which, in turn, allows us to gain stability of our body and our mind.
Detachment / non-attachment is only possible by complete surrender; without frustration of anything that could constitute an obstacle on the path to yoga.
